Description

A comforting breakfast dish made by soaking bread in a creamy mixture of eggs, cream, vanilla, and cinnamon, then frying until golden brown for a rich custard-like interior and crispy exterior. Perfect for weekend brunches, holiday gatherings, or everyday indulgence, this French toast is easy to make, versatile, and packed with flavor.

Ingredients

– 3 large eggs

– ¾ cup heavy cream (or milk for a lighter option)

– 2 teaspoons vanilla extract

– 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon

– Optional: pinch of nutmeg for added depth

– 6 tablespoons unsalted butter (for cooking)

– 6–8 slices of bread (white, wheat, brioche, challah, or French bread recommended)

– Maple syrup, for serving

– Optional toppings: powdered sugar, fresh berries, whipped cream, or sliced bananas

Instructions

  1. In a shallow bowl or baking dish, whisk together the eggs, heavy cream, vanilla extract, cinnamon, and optional nutmeg until well combined.
  2. Heat a large skillet or griddle over medium heat and melt 1 tablespoon of butter.
  3. Dip each slice of bread into the egg mixture, soaking for 10–15 seconds per side. Avoid over-soaking to prevent the bread from falling apart.
  4. Place the soaked bread in the skillet and cook for 2–3 minutes per side, or until golden brown and crispy.
  5. Repeat with the remaining butter and bread slices, adding more butter to the skillet as needed.
  6. Serve hot with maple syrup, and optional toppings like powdered sugar, fresh fruit, or whipped cream.

Notes

– For firmer slices, reduce soaking time slightly.

– Customize with mix-ins like chocolate chips, berries, or bananas before cooking.

– Use plant-based substitutes like almond milk, coconut cream, and vegan butter for a dairy-free version.

– Store leftovers in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 2 days or freeze for up to 1 month. Reheat in the oven at 350°F for 5–10 minutes to restore crispiness avoid microwaving.
