Description

Soft, fluffy cinnamon-sugar spirals topped with creamy icing. These homemade cinnamon rolls are the perfect cozy treat for breakfast, brunch, or holiday gatherings, simple enough for beginners, yet bakery-worthy in flavor and texture.

Ingredients

Scale

Dough

  • 2¾ cups all-purpose flour
  • ¼ cup granulated sugar
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • ¾ cup whole milk, warmed to 110°F (43°C)
  • 3 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted
  • 2¼ teaspoons instant yeast
  • 1 large egg

Filling

  • 3 tablespoons unsalted butter, softened
  • ⅓ cup brown sugar
  • 1 tablespoon ground cinnamon

Icing

  • 4 oz cream cheese, softened
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter, softened
  • ⅔ cup confectioners’ sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Instructions

  1. Activate Yeast: Warm milk to 110°F (43°C). Stir in sugar and yeast; let sit 5–10 minutes until frothy.
  2. Make Dough: Add egg and melted butter. Gradually mix in flour and salt. Knead until smooth and elastic. Place in a greased bowl, cover, and let rise 1–2 hours until doubled.
  3. Shape Rolls: Roll dough into a rectangle. Spread softened butter, then sprinkle brown sugar and cinnamon evenly. Roll up tightly and cut into 9 pieces. Place in a greased 9-inch pan.
  4. Second Rise: Cover and let rise 30–45 minutes.
  5. Bake: Bake at 375°F (190°C) for 18–22 minutes, until golden brown.
  6. Icing: Beat cream cheese, butter, confectioners’ sugar, and vanilla until smooth. Spread over warm rolls.

Notes

  • Avoid over-kneading for a lighter texture.
  • Add nuts, raisins, or extra spices like nutmeg for variety.
  • Store in an airtight container in the fridge up to 5 days or freeze baked rolls for longer.
  • Reheat at 350°F (175°C) for 5–10 minutes covered with foil.
