Description
BBQ Jackfruit Sandwiches are a plant-based alternative to pulled pork, made with tender young jackfruit simmered in smoky barbecue sauce and served on soft buns. With a meaty texture and bold, tangy flavor, they’re the perfect vegan comfort food for casual meals, BBQs, or game-day gatherings.
Ingredients
Scale
- 20 oz canned young jackfruit (in brine or water, drained and rinsed)
- 1 cup BBQ sauce
- 1 tablespoon olive oil
- ½ onion, diced
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 4–6 hamburger buns
Optional toppings:
- Coleslaw
- Pickles
- Fresh greens
- Avocado slices
- Jalapeños
Instructions
- Drain and rinse jackfruit; remove seeds or tough cores if needed.
- Heat olive oil in a skillet over medium heat. Sauté onion and garlic until softened.
- Add jackfruit, breaking it apart with a wooden spoon.
- Stir in BBQ sauce and simmer 15–20 minutes, stirring occasionally, until jackfruit softens and sauce thickens.
- Shred jackfruit with two forks for a pulled-pork texture.
- Assemble sandwiches on buns and top with coleslaw, pickles, or fresh greens.
- Serve warm.
Notes
- Use canned young green jackfruit for best results (not ripe jackfruit).
- Add smoked paprika, liquid smoke, or apple cider vinegar for extra depth.
- Store leftovers in an airtight container in the fridge up to 3 days, or freeze up to 3 months.
- Reheat in a skillet or microwave with a splash of BBQ sauce.
- For gluten-free, use certified GF buns.
