Description

BBQ Jackfruit Sandwiches are a plant-based alternative to pulled pork, made with tender young jackfruit simmered in smoky barbecue sauce and served on soft buns. With a meaty texture and bold, tangy flavor, they’re the perfect vegan comfort food for casual meals, BBQs, or game-day gatherings.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 20 oz canned young jackfruit (in brine or water, drained and rinsed)
  • 1 cup BBQ sauce
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • ½ onion, diced
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 46 hamburger buns

Optional toppings:

  • Coleslaw
  • Pickles
  • Fresh greens
  • Avocado slices
  • Jalapeños

Instructions

  1. Drain and rinse jackfruit; remove seeds or tough cores if needed.
  2. Heat olive oil in a skillet over medium heat. Sauté onion and garlic until softened.
  3. Add jackfruit, breaking it apart with a wooden spoon.
  4. Stir in BBQ sauce and simmer 15–20 minutes, stirring occasionally, until jackfruit softens and sauce thickens.
  5. Shred jackfruit with two forks for a pulled-pork texture.
  6. Assemble sandwiches on buns and top with coleslaw, pickles, or fresh greens.
  7. Serve warm.

Notes

  • Use canned young green jackfruit for best results (not ripe jackfruit).
  • Add smoked paprika, liquid smoke, or apple cider vinegar for extra depth.
  • Store leftovers in an airtight container in the fridge up to 3 days, or freeze up to 3 months.
  • Reheat in a skillet or microwave with a splash of BBQ sauce.
  • For gluten-free, use certified GF buns.
