Apple Cobbler is a warm, comforting dessert made with spiced apples topped with a soft, cake-like batter that bakes into a golden crust. This cozy fall favorite combines tender apples, warm spices, and a buttery topping for a simple yet satisfying treat. Perfect for holidays, family dinners, or cozy nights at home.

Ingredients

Scale

For the Apple Filling:

  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • 8 cups peeled and sliced apples
  • 3 tablespoons brown sugar
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  • 1 tablespoon all-purpose flour
  • 1½ teaspoons cinnamon
  • ¼ teaspoon allspice
  • ¼ teaspoon nutmeg

For the Topping:

  • 6 tablespoons melted butter
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 1¾ cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • ½ teaspoon salt

Optional Topping:

  • Sprinkle of granulated sugar and cinnamon before baking

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C) and grease a 9×13-inch baking dish.
  2. Cook the apples: In a saucepan, melt 2 tablespoons of butter. Add apples, brown sugar, lemon juice, flour, cinnamon, allspice, and nutmeg. Cook over medium heat until the apples soften slightly.
  3. Prepare the topping: In a mixing bowl, whisk together melted butter, sugar, buttermilk, vanilla, flour, baking powder, and salt until smooth.
  4. Assemble: Spread the apple mixture evenly in the prepared baking dish. Pour the batter over the apples, spreading evenly.
  5. Bake: Bake for 40–45 minutes, or until the topping is golden brown and the filling is bubbling.
  6. Cool & Serve: Allow to cool slightly before serving. Enjoy warm, optionally with a scoop of vanilla ice cream or caramel drizzle.

Notes

  • Avoid overcooking apples during pre-cook stage to maintain texture.
  • Add extra spices like cardamom, cloves, or ginger for more depth.
  • Store leftovers in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 5 days, or freeze for up to 3 months.
  • Reheat in the oven at 350°F (175°C) for 10–15 minutes to refresh texture.
  • Customize with mix-ins like nuts, raisins, or white chocolate chips.
